Starting at seven in the morning, the Palestinian group Hamas launched an unprecedented attack against Israel from the Gaza Strip, from the ground and from the air.
This is the biggest attack on Israel in years, a surprise attack that, in addition to the thousands of rockets fired, armed men infiltrated Israel. So far, 6 dead and 200 injured have been reported.
More than 5,000 rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip toward Israel, the Palestinian group Hamas said.
"We have decided to put an end to all the crimes of the occupation," they said.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called the security chiefs to a meeting. The Israel Defense Forces say they are declaring a "state of readiness for war" in response to the surprise attack from Gaza. Jerusalem responds with an air strike.
Israeli media reported that gunmen had opened fire on bystanders in the southern Israeli city of Sderot, and footage circulating on social media appeared to show clashes in the city's streets as well as gunmen in jeeps roaming the countryside.
Palestinian media also reported that a number of Israelis had been captured by the fighters.
