Starting at seven o'clock in the morning, the Palestinian group Hamas launched an unprecedented operation against Israel from the Gaza Strip, from the ground and from the air, and this is the beginning of a new war.
First, it began a nonstop launch of rockets against Israeli cities in the south and center of the country. Then raiding parties crossed the ever-guarded borders of the Belt and attacked the first population centers they reached.
The Israeli army is "ready for war", announced the Israeli Ministry of Defense, after the attack launched in the early hours of the morning. More than 5,000 rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip toward Israel, the Palestinian group said.
"We have decided to put an end to all the crimes of the occupation," they said.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said security chiefs would meet as a result of the rocket attacks.
An initial report from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that a "number of terrorists" had infiltrated into Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip and that residents in the surrounding areas had been asked to stay in their homes.
Air raid sirens sounded in southern Israel and could be heard in the greater Tel Aviv area, tens of kilometers to the north.
