Earthquake kills over 1,400 in Afghanistan/ Aid sent by air, search continues

Afghanistan has airlifted aid to pull survivors from the rubble of homes in eastern areas devastated by this week's earthquakes. The devastating quake killed 1,400 people, as efforts to distribute food, shelter and medical supplies are ramping up.

The first magnitude 6 earthquake, one of the worst in Afghanistan in recent years, caused extensive damage when it struck Kunar and Nangarhar provinces around midnight on Sunday at a shallow depth of 10 km (6 miles).

A second 5.5-magnitude earthquake caused panic and disrupted rescue efforts after sliding rocks down mountains and blocking roads to villages in remote areas.

Dozens of commandos were being sent by air to places where helicopters cannot land, to help transport the wounded to safer places, said Ehsanullah Ehsan, the head of disaster management in Kunar.

"A camp has been set up where service and relief committees are coordinating supplies and emergency assistance. Two centers are also overseeing the transfer of the wounded, the burial of the dead and the rescue of survivors," he said.

Earlier, rescue teams had used helicopters to transport the injured to hospital, while battling mountainous terrain and harsh weather to reach earthquake-hit villages along the border with Pakistan, where tremors destroyed mud-brick homes.

The death toll is 1,411, with 3,124 injured and more than 5,400 houses destroyed.
