Former Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi has apologized for his gesture towards journalist Lavinia Orefici. He said he was wrong with his action, adding that it was an instinctive gesture.
“I think it’s time to clarify a few things about what happened on Saturday during the presentation of my latest book. Looking at the footage, I realized that I had mechanically made that gesture in a different context. I made a mistake and I’m sorry. This story gives me the opportunity for reflection. I think it’s the right of everyone, regardless of what role they’ve played in life, to claim their own history and honor and not accept, as an inevitable fate, widespread exploitation, even ridicule, thanks to the power of the internet ,” he said.
The journalist asked the former President of the European Commission for a comment on a passage in the Ventotene Manifesto on European unification, regarding private property. Prodi appeared annoyed by the question and pulled the journalist's hair.
Lavinia Orefici said she felt humiliated as a journalist and as a woman by this gesture. "President Prodi, in addition to responding in an aggressive and intimidating tone, grabbed a lock of my hair and pulled it. It was shocking for me ," she declared.
