"Signal" scandal in the White House, former CIA director: All members

Former CIA director James Woolsey has spoken out about the Signal leak scandal, where plans for an attack on Yemen were discussed. In an interview with La Repubblica, he said that all participants in the conversation are responsible and that classified information can never be discussed over the phone.

According to him, such information cannot be discussed on the phone for two reasons, firstly, it endangers the lives of the soldiers involved and secondly, it also risks the operation failing. Asked about attempts to minimize the scandal, the former CIA director says there is no justification for such behavior.

Full interview:

-How do you assess the fact that the head of the Pentagon shared in a Signal conversation the schedules and weapons used for an attack against the Houthi, discussing it with colleagues from the CIA, national intelligence, and the White House National Security Council?

No one should ever discuss any military matters, top secret information, or plans related to national security over the phone. Never, under any circumstances.

-Why?

There are many reasons, but two are the main ones: doing so puts the lives of the military personnel involved in the operation at risk and also increases the likelihood that it will fail.

-But the administration responds that the information discussed in the Signal conversation was not classified, had already been communicated to the allied countries involved, and did not in any way compromise the success of the mission. Aren't these reasons enough to close the case?

There is no excuse for such behavior. None.

-If so, what should President Trump do with his closest advisors who were involved in this mistake?

I no longer have government responsibilities, so I prefer not to enter into these aspects of the debate. It is right that assessments be left to those who must make decisions.

-However, Democrats have been pushing for the dismissal of the senior officials involved, and even some Republicans are suggesting this behind the scenes. Then there are those who downplay the incident, arguing that The Atlantic editor Goldberg was mistakenly added to the conversation by a low-level National Security Council employee. What do you think of this?

The responsibility falls on those who participated in the conversation.

-We're talking about top-level administration officials—from the head of the Pentagon to the director of the CIA—who don't have time to deal with creating a group on Signal.

Exactly. Therefore, the responsibility lies with those who choose to participate and share this type of information.
