Terrorist attack in Australia, Netanyahu attacks Albanians: You allowed
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as leaders from around the world, expressed their concern over Sunday's terrorist attack on Bondi Beach, where at least 16 people lost their lives.

Netanyahu said he had written to his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese, in August, warning that the government's decision to recognize a Palestinian state "adds fuel to the fire of anti-Semitism, emboldens those who threaten Australian Jews and fuels the hatred of Jews that is already manifesting itself on your streets."

He claimed that Albanese had “replaced weakness with weakness and reconciliation with more reconciliation.”

"Your government did nothing to stop the spread of anti-Semitism in Australia. You did nothing to stop the cancerous cells that were growing within your country. You took no action. You allowed the disease to spread and the result is the horrific attacks on Jews that we saw today," he said.

Albanese declined to answer directly when asked about Netanyahu's comments during a media conference on Monday morning.

"This is a moment for national unity. This is a moment for Australians to come together. That's exactly what we're going to do," Albanese said in response.

Netanyahu praised the actions of a bystander who grabbed the gun from one of the attackers, saying he saluted "a brave Muslim man" who prevented the deaths of "innocent Jews."

"But we are now concerned for our people, for our security, and we do not remain silent. We fight those who try to exterminate us," Netanyahu said.

Meanwhile, Israeli President Isaac Herzog said in a video message posted online that "despicable terrorists deliberately targeted innocent Jewish families celebrating the first night of Hanukkah."

"The people of Israel stand together with all of you in this very dark and difficult moment, the Jewish people are strong, steadfast and united, and our message is clear, the lights of Hanukkah must continue and will be lit around the world, especially on Bondi Beach, in Sydney and all of Australia," said Herzog.
