An American billionaire has donated $65,000 to "hero" Ahmed al-Ahmed who snatched the gun from one of the perpetrators of the Bondi Beach massacre.
The footage showed the 43-year-old fruit shop owner running towards the gunman and grabbing his gun. He then pointed it at the attacker, forcing him to retreat.
A fundraising campaign has been launched online for Ahmed Al Ahmed, raising nearly $1 million, according to GoFundMe.
The largest donation is from William Ackman, CEO of Pershing Square Capital Management, who has praised the "brave hero" for saving lives.
Ahmed's parents previously said he was shot four or five times in the shoulder and is in the hospital.
Who is Ahmed al-Ahmed?
Ahmed al-Ahmed, 43, is a Sydney Muslim who owns a fruit shop in the suburb of Sutherland. He has two children and, according to his family, has never had any experience with guns. He is currently in hospital after sustaining injuries during the incident, including a wound to his arm and hand.
In the aftermath of the incident, many authorities, including New South Wales Premier Chris Minns, described Ahmed al-Ahmed as a “hero,” praising him for his courage and determination in such a dangerous situation. Another citizen who was also present at the scene helped confront the terrorist, but he happened to be unable to shoot.
The terrorist attack took place during a Hanukkah party on Australia's most popular beach. At least 15 people were killed and 27 others injured. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the attack as a serious act of anti-Semitism directed against the Jewish community, while stressing that he would tighten gun laws
