Searching for survivors in Morocco after the earthquake

The World Health Organization says more than 300,000 people live in the worst-hit areas and experts have warned the next 48 hours will be critical.

This is the deadliest earthquake in more than 60 years. Thousands of survivors of the Morocco earthquake spent the night outside, as many lost their homes or are afraid to go inside for fear of aftershocks.

At least 2,012 people died after the powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck on Friday night, and another 1,404 were seriously injured.

Those numbers are expected to rise as search and rescue teams continue to search for survivors. Devastated families are burying their loved ones and some of those who lost everything in the earthquake do not have the financial means to rebuild their homes.

Rescuers have warned that it could take months, if not years, for Morocco to recover. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who lost tens of thousands of people in a devastating earthquake earlier this year, is among those who have offered to send aid and rescue crews.

France and Germany, both of which have large populations of people of Moroccan descent, have also said they are ready to increase their forces.

And in an extraordinary move, neighboring Algeria, which cut diplomatic ties with Morocco in 2021, has offered to open its airspace for humanitarian aid and evacuations.

The British Red Cross launched an urgent appeal for money, amid fears that "the full extent of the devastation is likely to become apparent only in the coming days".

Some of the survivors fear that they have nothing to look forward to. Hamid Insala, a 72-year-old driver said: “I cannot rebuild my house. I don't know what I'm going to do. However, I am alive, so I will wait.”

Mohammed Azaou said: “When I felt the ground shaking under my feet and the house tilting, I ran to get my children out but my neighbors did not make it. Unfortunately, no one was found alive in this family.

Father and son were found dead and still looking for mother and daughter. It was like a bomb exploded."

This is the deadliest earthquake to hit Morocco since 1960, when a magnitude 5.8 earthquake killed at least 12,000 people.
