Ekrem Imamoglu of the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), who was expected to be President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's opponent in the next presidential election, which would normally be held in 2028, has been arrested and remanded in custody on corruption charges.
This decision led to the largest anti-government protests in the last decade and mass arrests across Turkey.
