Iran has warned that it will not accept a possible extension of the naval blockade by the United States, raising the stakes at a time of tension between the two countries.
Mohsen Rezaei, a senior military adviser to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, declared in an interview with state media that “Iran will not tolerate an extension of the naval blockade.” He added that “if the blockade continues, Iran will respond,” without providing details on the nature of this response.
Rezaei also praised the effectiveness of the measures taken so far, saying that "such a blockade has achieved nothing" and that, according to him, Iran has room to circumvent it.
"The Indian Ocean is extremely wide and we can easily pass through it. We have already done that," he said.
The statements come at a time when Washington is considering the possibility of extending the blockade of Iranian ports, as part of pressure on Tehran.
In the same interview, Rezaei also reacted to speculation about the condition and activity of the supreme leader, who has not appeared publicly for several weeks.
"The Supreme Leader is young, healthy and energetic, and is managing the country's affairs," he said.
On the other hand, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the US "has indications that Khamenei is still alive", but added that "it is not clear how much credibility he has as a leader".
Recent developments signal rising tensions between Tehran and Washington, while it remains unclear whether the situation will escalate further.
