Luxury lovers and guests of five-star hotels in Dubai were horrified by Iranian missiles. For years, the emirate has been portrayed as a haven for capital and stability, far from the political storms that plague its neighbors.
Dubai woke up this weekend with the usual look of a calm, orderly metropolis. Beach clubs on the Palm Jumeirah were packed from the early hours of the morning, joggers lined the promenade in the shadow of the high-rise towers, and the Dubai Mall continued its daily stream of shoppers. On social media, the city seemed untouched by regional tensions: clear skies, calm seas and the atmosphere typical of a global tourist destination.
Yet across the Gulf, the biggest regional conflict in decades was escalating. As the US and Israel expanded military operations against Iran and some airspace in the Middle East was closed, Dubai maintained a carefully controlled normality. That balance was shattered shortly after sunset.

After dusk, the first waves of Iranian missiles and drones headed toward the Gulf states. Air defense systems in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain were activated, with interceptors lighting up the night sky. Many tourists said they initially did not understand the situation. There were no traditional airstrike sirens, and only those with local phone numbers received emergency notifications on their devices.
Witnesses near the Fairmont The Palm resort reported seeing flames at the entrance to the hotel after what appeared to be a drone strike. It was initially thought to be an isolated incident. Within minutes, the area was cleared and traffic was back on the road. Crowds gathered again near the Dubai Mall fountains for the usual light show. But the festive atmosphere did not last.
During the night, emergency alarms were activated several times within a few minutes. Residents reported loud explosions that shook buildings. Official messages urged citizens to take shelter and stay away from windows. In many residential towers, neighbors asked for information about the nearest basements. Some spent the night in hallways or bathrooms to avoid exposure to glass.
