Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has published an op-ed about the US war with Iran and Washington's aim to damage the country's vital infrastructure.
Pompeo, in this article titled "Peace Through Strength: Why Targeting Iran's War Machine is Legal and Necessary ," said that those shocked by such a thing should refresh their memory and mentioned that such attacks are not a radical departure from international norms.
"It's a proven method, a method that has ended conflicts and saved lives," Pomepo emphasizes.
The former US Secretary of State mentioned the case of Kosovo in 1999 and the bombing campaign against the regime of Slobodan Milosevic. Pompeo said that the bombings, supported by many of today's critics, had hit Serbia's electrical grid with the aim of breaking Slobodan Milosevic.
“During the Kosovo campaign in the late 1990s, NATO forces, enthusiastically supported by many of today’s most vocal critics, struck the power grid in Belgrade to break Milosevic’s command and control. In World War II, we didn’t limit ourselves to tanks on the front lines. We hit the ball-bearing factories in Schweinfurt and the oil refineries that kept the Nazi war machine going, because we understood that you can’t defeat an aggressor while leaving its industrial heart intact,” Pompeo wrote.
According to the former Secretary, the recent limited attacks on Iranian infrastructure, power plants and bridges, along with the threat of expanding attacks, have predictably provoked a backlash from those who always blame the US.
Under international law, Pompeo points out, when an object effectively contributes to military activity, it loses its protected status and becomes a legitimate military target.
