Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has confirmed that IDF forces are in the heart of Gaza City, adding that the leader of Hamas in Gaza is surrounded in a bunker.
" For the first time in decades, the IDF is fighting in the heart of Gaza City. In the heart of terrorism ," said Major General Yaron Finkelman.
There was no indication on the ground that Israeli forces had moved en masse into the city, but an army spokesman, Richard Hecht, suggested that siege troops could raid inside. Tanks were positioned on the outskirts for a possible storming of Gaza's urban center, residents said.
" Every day and every hour the forces are killing militants, exposing tunnels and destroying weapons and advancing on enemy centers ," said Maj. Gen. Finkelman.
Hamas's military wing said its fighters were inflicting heavy casualties and damage on advancing Israeli forces. Neither side's battlefield claims could be verified.
