Several international humanitarian organizations operating in the Palestinian territories, including Doctors Without Borders (MSF), risk having their activities suspended starting early next year. The news was announced today by the Israeli Foreign Ministry, which announced that the government has taken legal steps to revoke the licenses of these organizations.
According to Israeli authorities, the licenses will be revoked from January 1, citing the lack of proper registration and suspicions of the involvement of some employees in terrorist activities. The Ministry of Diaspora Affairs announced that so far 37 organizations have been affected by this decision. They have been notified that they must suspend their activities by March 1, at least temporarily.
Doctors Without Borders warned last week that new registration requirements imposed by Israel could have serious humanitarian consequences. According to the organization, these measures risk leaving hundreds of thousands of Gaza Strip residents without vital medical care by 2026. MSF called on the Israeli authorities to ensure that international non-governmental organizations can continue to provide impartial and independent assistance in Gaza.
According to the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, several humanitarian organizations have refused Israeli authorities' request to submit complete lists of Palestinian employees for security screening purposes.
On the other hand, Israel has specifically accused MSF of involving some of its employees in terrorist activities. According to Israeli authorities, in June 2024 a member of the militant group Islamic Jihad who worked for the organization was killed, while in September it was revealed that another employee had served as a sniper for the Palestinian Hamas militia.
