Israel rejects US call for humanitarian ceasefire

Israeli warplanes struck the Maghaza refugee camp in the Gaza Strip in the early hours of Sunday, killing at least 33 people and injuring dozens, Palestinian health authorities said.

The attack was reported as Israel vowed to launch an offensive to destroy the militant group Hamas - which rules Gaza - despite calls from the United States for a pause to help desperate civilians.

The rising death toll in Gaza has sparked international outrage, as tens of thousands of people from Washington to Berlin took to the streets on Saturday to demand an immediate ceasefire.

Israel has rejected this idea of stopping the offensive, even for short humanitarian pauses, proposed by the American Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, during the visit he is conducting in the region.

On the contrary, Israel has said that the trapped Hamas leaders in Gaza are fighting its soldiers with "full force".

"Everyone in Gaza City is risking their lives," said Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

Huge plumes of smoke have been seen in besieged Gaza City, Israel's first target in the war against Hamas.

The Ministry of Health in Gaza has said that more than 9,400 Palestinians have been killed in the enclave within a month, and the number is expected to rise as the attacks continue.

Israel is continuing to bombard various parts of Gaza, saying it is targeting fighters.

But critics have said that Israel's attacks are often disproportionate, given the large number of women and children killed in these attacks.

Blinken met on Saturday with Arab foreign ministers, after the meetings he held in Israel with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who insisted that there can be no ceasefire until all the hostages taken by Hamas are released.

The Foreign Minister of Jordan, Ayman Safadi, has said that the Arab states demand an immediate ceasefire, saying that "the whole region is slipping into the water of hatred, which will define the generations to come."

Blinken, however, said that "in our view, a ceasefire now would only give Hamas space to regroup, and repeat what it did on October 7," a reference to the day Hamas launched its attacks in the south. of Israel, and has incited this war.

He has said that humanitarian pauses are key to protecting civilians, providing aid and getting foreign nationals out of Gaza, "while enabling Israel to achieve its goal of defeating Hamas."

A senior Hamas official, Osama Hamdan, told reporters in Beirut that Blinken, "must stop the aggression and not come up with ideas that cannot be implemented."

The spokesman for the military wing of Hamas said in a speech that the group's fighters destroyed 24 Israeli equipment and caused casualties in the last two days.

Egyptian officials have said they, along with Qatar, have proposed humanitarian pauses of six to 12 hours a day to allow aid to enter Gaza.

They have also called for Israel to release some women and elderly people from its prisons in exchange for the hostages taken by Hamas on October 7.

Large parts of neighborhoods in Gaza are now reduced to ashes as a result of the fighting.

United Nations observers have said that about 300,000 residents of the northern part of Gaza are taking shelter in UN facilities.

However, Israeli attacks have been reported to have hit these objects as well, while the UN agency has said that it has lost contact with many of its officials in the northern part of Gaza, where the Israeli offensive began.

According to the UN, over 1.5 million people in Gaza, or 70 percent of the population, have fled their homes.

Food, water and oil are essential for human life and for keeping hospitals operational.

The Israel-Hamas war has heightened tensions in the region, as Israel and Lebanon's militant group Hezbollah have exchanged fire along the border.

Since the start of the war, 150 Palestinians have been reported killed in the West Bank, according to Palestinian authorities.

Protests have also been held outside Netanyahu's office in Jerusalem, calling on him to resign and to step up efforts to return the 240 hostages taken by Hamas.

Netanyahu has refused to take responsibility for the October 7 attacks by Hamas in northern Israel, which killed more than 1,400 people./REL
