United States President Donald Trump has signaled in conversations with his aides that he would be willing to support the elimination of Iran's supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, if he refuses to meet Washington's demands, including stopping Iran's nuclear program, the Wall Street Journal reported.
According to the newspaper, Trump's stance was expressed in discussions with his advisers, while the US administration is considering various options to force Tehran to give up developing nuclear capabilities.
American and Israeli sources, cited by the WSJ, say that in the event of an operation against the Iranian leadership, Israel is expected to have the lead role in military action, while Washington would support the broader strategy against Iran's nuclear program.
Mojtaba Khamenei was recently appointed supreme leader of Iran following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in an airstrike during US and Israeli military operations in late February.
Donald Trump told CBS that he has someone in mind to replace Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, but did not provide details. When asked about the new Supreme Leader, Trump replied: " I don't have any message for him ."
According to reports, the new Iranian leader is considered a hard-line figure and closely linked to the Revolutionary Guard, which makes it unlikely that he will accept American demands to abandon nuclear ambitions.
