The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Iceland's decision to suspend the activities of the embassy in Moscow has destroyed bilateral cooperation.
Iceland announced on Friday that activities will be suspended from August 1 due to a low level of trade, cultural and political relations between the countries. It is further said that Iceland had asked Russia to reduce its diplomatic activities in the Icelandic capital, Reykjavik.
"The decision taken by the Icelandic authorities to lower the level of diplomatic relations with Russia destroys the entire range of Russian-Icelandic cooperation. We will take this unfriendly decision into account when building our ties with Iceland in the future. All anti-Russian actions of Reykjavik will inevitably be followed by a corresponding reaction," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
When announcing its decision, Iceland said that diplomatic relations had not been severed and that the embassy would reopen once relations were normalized.
