The images of the starving and exhausted children of Gaza can no longer be ignored by the mainstream Western media or by politicians who have so far remained silent in the face of the tragedy, becoming complicit in it. Even some of those who have so far maintained a silent stance have begun to demand an end to this carnage, at least in words, because nothing concrete is changing. Any other country, faced with such a death toll, would have been destroyed by NATO bombing.
From Scotland, where he was on an economic trip, US President Donald Trump declared that “it is necessary to end the famine” and that a “ceasefire is still possible.” Trump said he had also called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to stop the humanitarian tragedy, a tragic irony, as Netanyahu has openly shown that he ignores international pressure.
The news in recent days is that Israel has announced a tactical pause in military operations and a limited opening for humanitarian aid. But this is seen more as a propaganda maneuver than a real measure to save lives. Only a few dozen aid trucks have entered the territory, while a few food packages have been dropped from the air, an old and failed practice that was previously discontinued by the Biden administration due to the high cost and risk to civilians. In some cases, the packages have also caused casualties, after falling on people, while chaos has often erupted as food was looted among the hungry.
Meanwhile, while declaring "safe zones," the Israeli army struck precisely one of these areas, killing dozens of people waiting for aid, a bitter irony that belies the claim of "humanitarian pauses."
The campaign against the UN and the overthrow of propaganda
For weeks, Israel denied the mass famine in Gaza and then, when the facts became undeniable, tried to attribute the famine crisis to the United Nations, accusing it of failing to distribute aid and that the aid was being looted by Hamas.
But a Reuters investigation and a New York Times article, also cited by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, refuted these claims, confirming that the UN distribution system was working and that there was no evidence that Hamas had stolen humanitarian aid.
The silence that kills
For the first time, two Israeli humanitarian organizations, B'tselem and Physicians for Human Rights, have openly called the situation in Gaza "genocide." Hundreds of rabbis from around the world have also signed an open letter condemning the famine in the Gaza Strip. Even the American Jewish Committee, one of the most important Jewish organizations in the US, has expressed concern, albeit in subdued tones, about the humanitarian tragedy.
In contrast, AIPAC, the most powerful pro-Israel lobby in the US, continues to unconditionally support Netanyahu and his government, guaranteeing the US Congress's support for the military campaign.
In fact, what is happening in Gaza is not only the product of the decisions of Netanyahu and his ultranationalist government, but also of those American circles that see in the destruction of Gaza and the weakening of Palestine a step towards the creation of a “Greater Israel,” which according to them will be a regional superpower and a global factor.
