Keir Starmer's statement this afternoon was not well received by Israel. He warned of recognition of Palestine if the war in Gaza does not end by September.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry says it rejects the British Prime Minister's statements.
" The change in the British government's position at this time, following French action and domestic political pressures, constitutes a reward for Hamas and undermines efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza and a framework for the release of hostages ," the statement said.
Sir Keir Starmer has announced that the UK will recognise Palestine as a state at a United Nations meeting in September unless Israel agrees to end the "terrible situation in Gaza".
The prime minister said that while airlifts of aid have begun today, he wants to see at least 500 aid trucks a day entering Gaza.
Starmer says the time to recognise Palestine is now as it will have the highest impact, as the hope of a two-state solution, a "secure" Israel alongside a "viable" Palestinian state, is at stake.
