German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged Europe not to allow Russia to dictate the terms of a peace deal in Ukraine, warning that doing so would only embolden Russian President Vladimir Putin "to look for his next target."
"Putin has been testing the limits for a long time," Merz said in the German parliament, where the new budget is being discussed.
"He sabotages, spies, kills, tries to disturb people," the German chancellor said on Wednesday, DPA reports.
Merz said this became clear in Poland last week, when Russian drones violated the country's airspace and crashed over its territory for the first time.
Putin is also trying to destabilize German society, Chancellor Merz warned.
"We will not allow this to happen," Merz declared, adding that Germany is strengthening its defense capabilities for precisely this reason.
"We must prevent our adversaries from further aggression and, at the same time, bring our allies and partners closer together ," Merz said.
Germany has been one of Ukraine's biggest supporters after the large-scale Russian withdrawal in 2022.
According to German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, Germany has surpassed the United States and is now Ukraine's largest supplier of military aid./ REL
