
In protest, farmers blocked roads in Brussels, near the headquarters of the European Union, protesting against global trade agreements, new environmental measures and cheap imports from Ukraine.
The situation between the farmers and the Brussels police has become tense.
Tractors and tankers were seen on the road as farmers dumped vegetables and organic manure, foreign media reported. When the situation escalated, the police used tear gas and water cannons to keep the farmers and their machinery away.
Officials appealed to citizens to avoid coming to the city as much as possible and to work from home. The European Union eased the rules for the so-called fruit season. Member states will have more room to decide which land will be protected at which time of the year.
