Turin was engulfed in scenes of serious violence, marking one of the most violent episodes in recent months in Italy. A video shared on social media by Defense Minister Guido Crosetto and former Democratic Party senator Stefano Esposito shows the moment a group of demonstrators surround and brutally attack a police officer, ten against one, using a hammer.

The event took place in Corso Regina Margherita, near the entrance to the Luigi Einaudi university campus and the former headquarters of the Askatasuna social center, which was dismantled by the authorities on December 18. It was in this area, for about an hour, from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM, that what the authorities describe as a genuine urban guerrilla took place.

According to the reconstruction of the events, a large group of demonstrators suddenly pulled out homemade shields, initiating a direct clash with the security forces. The situation quickly escalated: burning garbage cans, stones, fireworks and smoke bombs, turning the street into a battlefield.

In this chaos, an attack on a police officer also occurred, who was hit and surrounded until a colleague intervened, stopping the attack. The published footage documents one of the most violent phases of the riots that shook the area.

The political reaction from Rome was immediate. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni strongly condemned the violence, stressing that the state will not back down in the face of extremist groups.

" What happened today in Turin is serious and unacceptable. These are neither dissent nor protest: they are violent aggressions aimed at attacking the state and those who represent it. And for this reason they must be treated for what they are, without deductions and without justifications ," declared Meloni. She added that the government has strengthened instruments against impunity and demanded that justice also act without tolerance, to avoid a repetition of previous cases of "leniency" towards violence.

The violence did not stop at the police. A crew from the public television station Rai was attacked during the protest. The Rai corporation strongly condemned the aggression against journalist Bianca Leonardi and her cameraman, part of the show “Far West”. According to the official statement, they were physically beaten, threatened and forced to leave, while stones were thrown at them and their work equipment was destroyed.

The events in Turin are being seen as an alarm signal for the radicalization of the protests and for the increasingly fierce clash between the Meloni government and antagonistic leftist movements, in an Italy where the line between protest and violence is becoming increasingly dangerous.
