US President Donald Trump has been heavily criticized after a social media post echoing Napoleon Bonaparte's statement that "he who saves his country must break no law."
This phrase is attributed to the French military leader, who created the Napoleonic Code of civil law in 1804 before being proclaimed emperor.
The post came at the end of another tumultuous week at the start of Trump's second presidency, during which colleagues questioned the legitimacy of judges making a series of decisions. His challenge to some of those orders, including one ordering the restoration of funding for agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, has prompted some of the president's opponents to declare a constitutional crisis.
"He is the most illegitimate president in US history. In our system of government, it is up to the courts to determine whether the president is using his power 'legitimately', not the president," declared Robert Reich, a former US secretary of labor.
"He spoke like a true dictator," wrote Senator Adam Schiff of California, an early Trump opponent, on X.
While Trump says he abides by the court's decisions, his advisers have attacked the judges on social media and called for their impeachment.
