Netanyahu's threat, Guterres calls on Israel not to carry out an offensive

The head of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, called on Israel not to occupy the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

Guterres' call came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would occupy Rafah regardless of whether or not a deal is reached with Hamas, the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union, for the release of the hostages.

" A military operation in Rafah would be an intolerable escalation, killing thousands more civilians and forcing hundreds of thousands more to flee ," Guterres said.

" Such an operation would have a devastating impact on the Palestinians in Gaza, with serious consequences for the occupied West Bank and the entire region. All members of the Security Council and many other governments have clearly expressed their opposition to such an operation. I call on all those who have influence over Israel to do everything they can to prevent such an operation ," Guterres added.
