Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reiterated today that Moscow is ready to play an active role in resolving the problem of Iran's enriched uranium, including options such as reprocessing it into fuel-grade uranium or transferring a quantity to Russia for storage.
"This role could take many forms, including reprocessing highly enriched uranium into fuel-grade uranium, transferring a certain amount to Russia for storage ," Lavrov said during his two-day visit to Beijing.
He stressed that any solution must be acceptable to Iran, without violating its inalienable right, like the right of any other state, to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes.
Lavrov called this an inalienable right for the Islamic Republic of Iran. His statements came after meetings with Chinese leaders, including President Xi Jinping.
Russia has historically been a party to the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA) between Iran and six world powers. As part of that agreement, Moscow removed large amounts of Iran's enriched uranium. The Kremlin has politically supported Tehran since the US unilaterally withdrew from the deal during Donald Trump's first term.
