Khamenei threatens US: The weapon that will sink the ship is more dangerous

Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei today threatened the US aircraft carrier, anchored off the coast of his country, saying "more dangerous than a warship is the weapon that can send it to the bottom of the sea."

Khamenei, speaking under a banner that read "whoever attacks you, respond in kind."

"He says our army is the strongest in the world. The strongest army in the world can sometimes be hit so hard that it can't get up again. (...) You won't be able to destroy the Islamic Republic either," he said.

Khamenei's comments come as crucial talks between Tehran and Washington to resolve a long-running dispute over Iran's nuclear program begin today, with little sign of a compromise as Washington builds up its forces in the region. U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will take part in the negotiations, which are being brokered by Oman, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters, along with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

But the US military is also preparing for the possibility of weeks-long operations against Iran if President Donald Trump orders an attack, two US officials told Reuters.

Meanwhile, Iran began military exercises on Monday in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital international waterway and oil export route for Gulf Arab states, which have called for diplomacy to end the dispute.

Washington has tried to expand the scope of the talks to non-nuclear issues, such as Iran's missile stockpile. Tehran says it is only willing to discuss limits on its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief, and that it will not completely give up uranium enrichment or discuss its missile program.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told a news conference in Budapest that it was difficult to reach a deal with Iran, but the US was willing to try. Araghchi met on Monday with Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, in Geneva to discuss cooperation with the IAEA and technical aspects of future talks with the US.
