Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi says his country supports Iran in protecting its "sovereignty, security and national dignity," according to a statement from the ministry.
In a phone call with Iran's acting foreign minister, Wang reiterated Beijing's condemnation of the killing of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, saying the attack violated Iran's sovereignty and threatened regional stability.
Wang told Ali Bagheri Khan that Haniyeh's killing "directly undermined the ceasefire negotiation process in Gaza and undermined regional peace and stability," China's Foreign Ministry said.
Iran and Hamas have accused Israel of carrying out an attack that killed Haniyeh on July 31. Israel has not claimed or denied responsibility for the killing. Iran has promised to "severely punish" Israel for the killing.
