US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the events of last week and the last few hours underlined how "uncertain" the situation in the Middle East is.
At a press conference in New York, Blinken said that Israel has the right to defend itself against terrorism, but how it does so is very important.
He underlined that the decisions that will be taken in the following hours will determine the future of the region for the coming years.
"The choices that all parties will make in the coming days will determine which path this region is on with profound consequences for its people now and possibly for years to come. One of the choices is the path of diplomacy, which includes reaching a cease-fire along the border between Israel and Lebanon, as well as a cease-fire in Gaza.
The US has made it clear that it believes the way forward is through diplomacy, not conflict. The path to diplomacy may seem hard to see at the moment, but it is there, and in our judgment it is necessary. We will continue to work intensively with all parties to encourage them to choose that direction ," said Blinken.
