Pope Francis has reiterated his call for a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine, adding that war is always a defeat. He also stressed that Jerusalem should have "special status".
" They are two peoples who must live together. With that wise solution, two states, the Oslo accords, two well-defined states and Jerusalem with a special status," he told Italy's RAI broadcaster .
The two-state solution has long been proposed as the best hope for peace in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It would see an independent Palestinian state created alongside the existing one of Israel - giving both people their own territory.
That is the official position of the UK, the US, the United Nations - even Israel itself - but many now say there is little hope of achieving it.
