In recent months, nuclear-armed North Korea has repeatedly tested missiles, raising regional tension.

South Korea's military reported today that Pyongyang has fired several cruise missiles off its east coast.

The missile launch took place near the port of Sinpo. Neither the number nor the type of missiles is yet clear.

On Wednesday, North Korea test-fired a new strategic cruise missile called the Pulhwasal-3-31, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported.

Reporting the new launch, which took place at 08:00 (local time), South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) announced that the military has been coordinating closely with the United States to monitor additional signs of North Korea's provocations.

Is North Korea's leader really thinking about war?

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has been increasingly aggressive in his policy direction and rhetoric in recent months, ending several agreements aimed at maintaining peace and increasing military action.

Pyongyang has claimed to have tested in early January a new solid-fuel missile and several underwater attack drones, which are believed to be capable of carrying a nuclear weapon.

The statements follow two years of almost monthly missile launches and weapons development in flagrant violation of UN sanctions.

Earlier this month, Kim Jong Un declared that the previous primary goal of reunification with South Korea had ended, labeling the South as the "main enemy."

This has led to concerns that North Korea is preparing for war.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol told his cabinet this month that if the North carries out a provocation, the South will retaliate many times stronger, showing the overwhelming capabilities of the South Korean military.
