Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Serbia, like any other country, is sovereign in its own choices and that it is the Serbs who will have to make the choice. According to Peskov, Moscow sees the European Union's demands as an attempt to weaken or ruin relations between Serbia and Russia.
"Every country is sovereign in its choice, and so is Serbia. And it is the Serbs who will have to make a choice," said Dimitry Peskov.
Peskov's statement comes after a speech by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who said that Serbia is facing direct demands from "Brussels bureaucrats" to follow an anti-Russian line and even to send its troops to a bloc being formed against Russia.
" Serbia is facing direct demands from Brussels bureaucrats who want it to pursue an anti-Russian stance and even send its army to the same bloc they threaten to form against our country ," Lavrov said during the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).
Lavrov accused the European Union of exploiting Serbia's desire for European integration to force it to break traditional ties with Russia. The Kremlin emphasizes that the final decision belongs to the Serbian people and their leadership, respecting Belgrade's sovereignty in this delicate issue.
