US President Donald Trump has ordered the United States Navy to attack any Iranian ships that lay mines in the Strait of Hormuz. He stressed that the Iranian ships are at the bottom of the sea and that they are using small boats to lay floating mines. Trump added that the United States has been working to clear the strait of mines.
“I have ordered the United States Navy to shoot down and kill any vessel, no matter how small (their Navy ships are ALL, 159 of them, at the bottom of the sea!), that is laying mines in the waters of the Strait of Hormuz. There should be no hesitation. In addition, our mine sweepers are clearing the Strait now. I am hereby ordering this activity to continue, but at a tripled rate ,” Trump wrote in a post on social media.
Last month, Trump similarly said the US military would attack any ship that laid mines. The issue has returned to the spotlight as Trump negotiates how to move maritime traffic through the strait as global economic pressure mounts.
Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth have repeatedly said that Iran's naval forces, estimated to number about 150 ships, have been destroyed.
