The United States Embassy in Belgrade has released details of the meeting between the US Ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, and the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić.
The announcement states that the US appreciates Serbia's role in maintaining regional stability and expresses its readiness to deepen cooperation, including the development of a joint exercise between Serbia and NATO, planned for May.
However, a clear message was also given during the meeting regarding Serbia's strategic direction in the field of security. Ambassador Whitaker emphasized that cooperation with "unreliable partners" in defense and security creates long-term strategic dependence, which is difficult to undo and complicates relations with Western countries.
He underlined that in order to build a modern and future-oriented partnership, Serbia must harmonize its strategic course with the West, emphasizing that security is directly related to choosing the right partners.
"Constructive meeting between US Ambassador to NATO Aleksandar Vučić, Matthew Whitaker, and President Vučić, US Mission to NATO, about the beginning of a new era in US-Serbia relations. We value Serbia's role in regional stability and look forward to a joint Serbia-NATO exercise in May."
However, Ambassador Whitaker was clear: Serbia's defense and security cooperation with unreliable partners creates a long-term strategic dependency that is difficult to dismantle and complicates future cooperation. For a modern, forward-looking partnership, Serbia's strategic direction must be aligned with the West. Security depends on choosing the right partners," the embassy announced.
