Kremlin: Putin ready to discuss peace in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to move towards a peace settlement with Ukraine, but Moscow's main objective is to achieve its own goals, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told state television on July 20.

Peskov said the world is now accustomed to the sometimes "harsh" rhetoric of US President Donald Trump, but added that Trump has also underlined that he will continue to seek a peace agreement with Russia.

"President Putin has spoken several times about his desire for a solution for Ukraine to be reached as soon as possible by peaceful means. This is a long process, it requires effort and it is not easy," Peskov told state television journalist Pavel Zarubin.

"The most important things for us are achieving our objectives. Our objectives are clear," he added.

On Monday, Trump took a tougher stance on Russia, promising a new wave of military aid to Ukraine, including Patriot missile defense systems.

He also gave Russia a 50-day deadline to accept a ceasefire, otherwise he said Moscow would face new sanctions.

Meanwhile, Ukraine, which is facing the war launched by Russia in 2022, has offered Moscow to hold peace talks in the coming weeks.

"Everything must be done to achieve a ceasefire," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on July 19./ REL
