These are just some of the headlines Trump and his team have generated over the past two weeks. But none of them have dominated for more than a single news cycle. Why? The Epstein dossier.
Washington doesn't stop talking about the late financier: did the convicted sex offender kill himself to protect the secrets of his many famous acquaintances? Where is his client list? Who is hiding behind the data cover-up? What does Trump really know and how close was his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein? Is all this good for the Democrats?
Try as he might, the president can't seem to find a way to change the conversation. "Then he'll have to invade Greenland," says one exasperated Republican. A Trump supporter sighs: "It's a big mess."
Two weeks after the Justice Department and FBI released a memo saying Epstein killed himself while in jail awaiting trial and that he had no “client list,” the story has gained momentum. Now, both Republicans and Democrats are expressing concern about an alleged cover-up.
For Trump’s base, it’s a test of purity that shows whether you’re a slave to the establishment or prepared to rise up against it. Belief in the Epstein conspiracy is a test case in their distaste for the deep state. For old-school Republicans, Trump’s response to him is an unforced error that poses electoral risk. For Democrats, it’s the first political skirmish in a while that has made the president sweat.
What at first glance might have seemed like a fairly trivial story has turned into a complicated political dance with the potential to influence crucial midterm elections for Congress next year.
After spending days describing the subject as “BORING,” Trump finally reversed course Thursday in the face of mounting complaints about his own case. In response to what he called the “ridiculous amount of publicity” given to Epstein, he ordered his attorney general, Pam Bondi, to “submit any relevant grand jury evidence” (the word “relevant” is potentially getting a lot of work there).
