The risk of imposing fuel savings measures in Europe is becoming increasingly concrete, a scenario that was also predicted by the International Energy Agency with its plan published on March 21.
On March 31, European Commissioner for Energy, Dan Jørgensen, addressed the Energy Ministers of the European Union countries, gathered in a video conference for an informal council regarding the continuation of the war in the Middle East.
" On the one hand, the European Union's security of supply remains guaranteed, but we must be prepared for a possible prolonged disruption of international energy trade ," he wrote in a letter to the 27 ministers.
Jørgensen invited member states to consider a range of measures to guarantee the supply of oil and refined products, in close coordination with the European Commission, the Oil Coordination Group and the Energy Union Task Force.
At the same time, he called for austerity measures on the demand side, especially in the transport sector. In the letter, cited by Politico, Brussels suggests that governments evaluate voluntary measures to limit the use of private vehicles and non-essential air flights.
" Even if peace is restored tomorrow, we will not return to normality in the near future ," the letter states.
Jørgensen called on member countries to follow the International Energy Agency's recommendations, which include working from home when possible, reducing speed limits on highways by 10 km/h, promoting public transport, alternating the use of private vehicles, increasing car sharing and more efficient driving practices.
