The order given by President Donald Trump has been clear, not to target civilians.
US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has reacted to last night's attacks, saying that the strike on the three plants was aimed at "degrading" and "destroying" Iran's nuclear capabilities.
In a press statement, while recounting details of the attack, he said the US destroyed the Iranian nuclear program but did not affect Iranian troops or civilians.
The strikes focused on key installations at Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan, using Tomahawk missiles and bombs designed to penetrate underground bunkers. US President Donald Trump, in a brief statement, reinforced this message by stressing: “Fordow is no more” – while assuring that there were no casualties on the Iranian side.
Hegseth said many presidents 'dreamed of delivering the final blow to Iran's nuclear program, but no one could until Trump did.' He added that the operation against Iran was 'brave and brilliant.'
"When President Trump speaks, the world should listen. The U.S. military is the most powerful military the world has ever known - no other country on planet Earth could have carried out this morning's operation," Hegseth declared at the Pentagon.
Hegseth stressed that President Trump has stated for more than a decade that "Iran should not have a nuclear weapon" and thanks to last night's decision, Iran's nuclear ambitions have disappeared.
However, President Trump “seeks peace,” Hegseth continues, adding that Iran “must choose that path.”
The defense secretary also stressed that Iran should not retaliate, as the president emphasized last night.
"Every American involved in this operation performed flawlessly, and I want to acknowledge our allies in Israel as well. The United States does not seek war, but let me be clear - we will act swiftly and decisively when our people, our partners, or our interests are threatened ," he said.
Asked if the goal was or is regime change, Pete Hegseth said that “this mission was not and has not been about regime change.” The defense secretary also said that the US protected national interests and our ally, Israel.
"The President authorized a precision operation to neutralize the threats to our national interests posed by the Iranian nuclear program and the collective self-defense of our troops and our ally, Israel," he said.
But does the US have contacts with Iran? Hegseth stated that there were public and private messages sent directly to the Iranians.
He said Tehran and Washington were in contact through Oman. Hegseth added: “ Iran understands exactly what the American position is, exactly what steps they can take to allow peace .”
