France's First Lady, Brigitte Macron, has come under fire after she was filmed calling feminist protesters "dirty whores." Her comment came before a performance by comedian Ary Abittan, who has previously been accused of rape.

Macron made the comments on Sunday backstage at the Folies Bergere theater in Paris, where she had gone with her daughter Tiphaine Auziere to see Abittan's play.

In a video published on Monday by French magazine Public, Abittan told Macron that he was "scared" after last night's protests, while she responded with a laugh: "If there are any dirty whores, we will throw them out."

On Saturday, feminist activists from the #NousToutes collective had interrupted Abittan's performance, wearing masks with his face and the word "rapist", and chanting "Abittan rapist".

Abittan was accused of rape in late 2021 by a woman he had been dating. After a three-year investigation, prosecutors dropped the case and an appeals court upheld the decision in January. His return to performing has been opposed by feminist groups.

The video of Macron's comments sparked widespread critical reaction.

French actress Judith Godreche wrote on Instagram: "I'm also a dirty whore. And I support all the others."

Manon Aubry, an MEP from the radical left party La France Insoumise, wrote on social media: "We started with women's rights as the 'big five-year issue', and we end up insulting them."

Marine Tondelier, leader of the Green party, called the comment "deeply offensive" in an interview with BFM-TV.

"A First Lady shouldn't say that," she said.

Macron's office said the exchange "should only be seen as a criticism of the radical method" used by the feminist protesters.
