According to reports from the Axios news agency, Donald Trump's advisers, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, appear to have asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to accept the handover of the Donbas region during a phone call, without the possibility of negotiations or compensation.
According to sources, the American proposal for "peace" became even tougher for Ukraine after a five-hour meeting between Trump's advisers and Vladimir Putin on December 2.
The updated plan included harsh demands: territorial concessions, handing over control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, and a total lack of security guarantees.
It is reported that Zelensky was essentially forced to unilaterally accept the loss of Donbas, violating any possibility of dialogue or a solution favorable to Ukraine.
This constitutes unprecedented pressure on the Ukrainian president and raises international concerns about the country's justice and security.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has again attacked his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, over the updated peace plan.
"We've spoken to President Putin and we've spoken to Ukrainian leaders, including President Zelensky. And I have to say I'm a little disappointed that President Zelensky hasn't read the proposal yet. That was just a few hours ago. His people like it. But he doesn't. Russia agrees with it. Russia would rather have the whole country when you think about it. But Russia, I believe, agrees with it, but I'm not sure Zelensky agrees with it. His people like it. But he hasn't read it," Trump said.
US President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, wrapped up several days of talks with top Ukrainian negotiator Rustem Umerov on Saturday.
Ahead of his planned consultations with European leaders in the coming days, Zelenskiy said on Sunday that talks with the US had been constructive but not easy.
Despite U.S. mediation and periodic high-level contacts, progress in peace talks has been slow, with disagreements over security guarantees for Kiev and the status of territory occupied by Russia still unresolved. Moscow says it is open to negotiations and blames Kiev and the West for blocking peace, while Ukraine and its allies say Russia is dragging its feet and using diplomacy to solidify its gains.
