Who founded the KGB?

When discussing secret police and foreign counterintelligence , nothing compares to the KGB. It was the largest organization of its kind in the era of the Soviet Union, with more than 480 . 000 agents, 200 . 000 soldiers and millions of informants.

These agents were responsible for informing Soviet leaders on key leaders of other countries as well as for controlling the Soviet population . KGB means Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti, or Committee for State Security, in Russian .

The organization was an extension of the NKGB, which operated under Soviet communist leader Joseph Stalin . NKGB spies managed to infiltrate many Western governments . _ It is even said that the Soviets had their agents at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in the US , a research facility that developed the first nuclear weapons .

The organization was so successful that it is believed that Stalin knew more about what was happening to the US, German and French troops than his own counterparts for the auxiliaries . Also, the NKGB was engaged within the country as a " secret police " , just like the Department of National Security in the USA.

In 1954, the new Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev laid the foundations for the KGB to serve as the " sword and shield of the Communist Party " . Khrushchev became prime minister of the Soviet Union in 1953 after Stalin 's death . In a speech delivered in 1956 , he denounced Stalin's crimes .

Meanwhile , he began to lead the process of de-Stalinization , a program aimed at reforming the politics of the Soviet Union . According to this program, the powers of intelligence organizations and the secret police were reduced , foreign nationals were allowed to enter the country , and even artistic freedom was allowed among the Soviets themselves .

While Khrushchev was ostensibly creating a freer Soviet Union, the KGB was working hard to conduct foreign intelligence operations , and eventually became known as the best in the world. The KGB operated inside and outside the country - with agents posing as businessmen or in other " harmless " functions .

She managed to penetrate the Western secret services in almost every capital . The KGB attempted a failed rebellion under leader Mikail Gorbachev , which led to the dissolution of many functions. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, then-leader Boris Yeltsin also ordered the disbandment of the KGB . / Bota.al
