US Vice President Kamala Harris is the main contender to continue the race left by Joe Biden. Chances are high that she will run against Donald Trump in the November presidential election.
So Who is Kamala Harris?
The 55-year-old was born in Oakland, California, and is the daughter of immigrants from Jamaica.
Harris' mother, Shyamala Gopalan, came to the United States from India to pursue a doctoral degree in California. Her father, Donald Harris, arrived from Jamaica and taught economics at Stanford University.
Balachandran, Harris' 80-year-old uncle, laughed and said he was "very, very happy" with the news.
His sister Sarala Gopalan, a retired doctor in the southern Indian city of Chennai, told an Indian television channel that the whole family was overwhelmed by the news. She praised Harris as a kind and devoted granddaughter.
On social media, Indian politicians and commentators also expressed pride in her choice. Harris, whose name means "lily," said that after her parents' divorce, her mother raised her two daughters with an appreciation of their dual heritage.
“My Indian mother knew she was raising two black girls,” Harris said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times in 2015.
In Jamaica, friends of Harris' father said they were pleased with the choice. Richard Bernal, a former Jamaican ambassador to the United States, compared the situation to when Colin Powell became US Secretary of State, as Powell's parents were Jamaican immigrants.
She graduated from the University of California, Faculty of Law and in 2010 was elected as the attorney general of California.
Ms. Harris arrived in Washington less than four years ago as a senator from California.
Some of Mr. Biden's top advisers appeared to have raised questions about her loyalty and ambitions, but he appears to have overcome those reservations.
American media write that Willie Broen, who had an affair with Harris when he was still married, has a great deal of credit for her career.
The embarrassing past
Kamala Harris' past has not always been so glorious.
The media has rehashed an embarrassing story of hers, suggesting that she rose this far thanks to an affair with powerful politician Willie Brown.
It all started in 1993. Brown was then 60 years old and was the first black mayor.
He ran San Francisco. But he also had another passion: women.
Although he was married, Brown despised his girlfriends. And one of them was exactly Kamala Harris, then only 29 years old.
At the time it was rumored that Brown would leave his wife to marry Harris.
Which actually didn't happen. Their relationship lasted several years, and each then looked at his own work.
Harris married the husband she still has today, but she turned into one of the most powerful prosecutors, and now an important politician, according to the media, thanks to Brown's influence and lobbying.
