The FBI says it is investigating the leak of two highly classified intelligence documents that describe Israel's preparations for a retaliatory attack on Iran.
The documents were circulated on Telegram last week.
White House spokesman John Kirby said it had not been determined whether the disclosure was a hack or a leak and that Joe Biden was closely monitoring the results of the investigation.
"We are not exactly sure how these documents found their way into the public domain," he told reporters.
"The president remains deeply concerned about any leakage of classified information into the public domain. This is not supposed to happen and is unacceptable when it does," he continued.
Israel is expected to respond to a ballistic missile attack that Iran launched against it in early October.
Iran fired about 200 missiles at Israel in response to the assassinations of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut.
