Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared today that an immediate ceasefire is the necessary first step towards a final peace agreement with Russia.
He spoke at a press conference alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, a day before his meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington.
"First we need to stop the killings. Putin has a lot of demands, but we don't know them all, and if they are as many as we have heard, then it will take time to consider them. It is impossible to do this under the pressure of weapons. We need a ceasefire and then a final agreement," Zelenskyy said.
Responding to recent signals from the Kremlin about "territorial swaps," the Ukrainian president stated categorically that the country's constitution makes it impossible to hand over or trade land.
"We need real negotiations, which means starting where the front line is now. The contact line is the best basis for talks. Russia is still unsuccessful in the Donetsk region – Putin has not been able to take it for 12 years," Zelenskyy stressed.
He added that any serious talks on territorial issues should take place at a high level, between Ukraine and Russia, as well as in a trilateral Ukraine-US-Russia format. "So far, Russia has not given any signs of such a trilateral. And if it refuses, then new sanctions should follow," the Ukrainian president warned.
For her part, Ursula von der Leyen reiterated that the European Union will continue its support for Kiev and warned of a new package of sanctions against Moscow if there are no clear steps towards peace.
