Zelensky and Von der Leyen conference before US visit: Europe must remain united

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in a joint conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, called on Europe to maintain unity in the face of Russian aggression, calling this the main condition for achieving peace.

"Europe must be as united now as it was when the war began in 2022, and only in this way can true peace be achieved," Zelenskyy declared.

Referring to the Kremlin's demands, he added: "Putin has many demands, but we don't know them all. It is impossible to negotiate under the pressure of guns."

The Ukrainian head of state stressed that the current front lines should serve as the basis for any negotiation process. "We need real negotiations, which means starting where the front line is now," he stressed.

Zelenskyy also called for a summit between Ukraine, Russia and the United States, but noted that Moscow has not yet given positive signals. "If Russia refuses, then new sanctions should follow," he warned.

Regarding security guarantees, the Ukrainian president thanked Washington and President Donald Trump for their willingness to work with Europe. “I am grateful to the US for its readiness to provide security guarantees, but there are still no details on how they will work,” Zelenskyy said.

He compared this support to NATO's collective defense clause: "Like NATO's Article 5, we consider EU membership as part of our security guarantees."

For her part, Ursula von der Leyen reiterated the position that "international borders cannot be changed by force" and announced that the EU is preparing the 19th package of sanctions against Russia, which is expected to be adopted in early September.
