Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared a 32-hour ceasefire in Ukraine over the Orthodox Easter weekend, in a move that comes amid ongoing efforts to reduce tensions in the years-long conflict.
According to the decree published by the Kremlin, the ceasefire will begin on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. and will last until the end of Sunday.
Russian authorities have ordered forces on the ground to respect this temporary ceasefire during the religious holiday period.
Moscow's decision follows a proposal made earlier this week by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
"The offer was made through the United States," Zelenskyy said, suggesting a mutual ban on attacks on energy infrastructure during Easter.
The United States has played a mediating role in contacts between delegations from Moscow and Kiev.
Despite the initiative, previous ceasefire attempts have had limited success. A ceasefire announced by Russia over Easter last year was accompanied by mutual accusations of violations by both sides.
