United States President Donald Trump declared that he is close to reaching an agreement with Iran, expressing optimism about the progress of negotiations at a sensitive moment for the region.
In an interview with NBC News, Trump expressed "very optimistic" about a diplomatic solution, emphasizing that the Iranian side's position changes significantly in direct talks compared to public statements.
" They speak very differently when they are in a meeting compared to what they say in the media. They are much more reasonable ," he said.
The US president went further, claiming that the parties are close to agreement on the main issues. "They agree on everything they need to agree on," Trump said, adding a strong assessment of the Iranian situation: "They are defeated" and "they don't have an army."
However, he warned that failure of the negotiations would have serious consequences. " If no agreement is reached, it will be very painful ," he declared.
The statements come at a time when a US diplomatic delegation, led by Vice President JD Vance, is expected to travel to Pakistan for important talks aimed at ending the conflict that has been going on for almost six weeks.
At the same time, the situation on the ground remains fragile. Israeli forces continue operations in southern Lebanon, where Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed organization, operates. This has added pressure to the diplomatic process.
Trump also confirmed that he had a phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, asking him to reduce the intensity of operations so as not to jeopardize negotiations.
" I spoke to Bibi and he's going to tone it down. I think we need to be a little more restrained ," Trump said.
Along the same lines, Vice President JD Vance stated from Hungary that Israel could "somewhat restrain" its actions in Lebanon, reflecting efforts to keep the diplomatic channel open.
Developments show that, despite strong rhetoric and tensions on the ground, a space for agreement is being created. However, the sustainability of this process remains uncertain and dependent on the balance between negotiations and military developments.
