Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam categorically opposes Israel's efforts to create a buffer zone in southern Lebanon, saying the government will not sign an agreement that does not include Israel's withdrawal from all areas it currently occupies. Salam is counting on the US to make this possible.
"We are entering these negotiations... convinced that the US is the party that can have influence over Israel... and we hope that they will continue to exert their influence over Israel ," he says.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military has pledged to maintain a presence in southern Lebanon ahead of negotiations in Washington.
In a message to residents of southern Lebanon, IDF Arabic-language spokesman Avichay Adraee warned that Israeli troops continued to hold their positions in southern Lebanon during the current ceasefire, which is set to expire on Sunday.
The troops are said to remain in the south, where Israel has been trying to create a "security zone," destroying homes and infrastructure in the process, in response to what it calls "ongoing" Hezbollah activities.
