A group of female lawmakers in the Mexico City Congress got into a physical altercation. As cameras broadcast the incident live, the lawmakers pulled each other's hair and punched each other.
The brawl broke out after a group of women from the right-wing National Action Party approached the legislature's main podium in protest against a rule they claimed had been violated by the left-wing Morena party, which has a majority in the legislature.
The debate included reforming the city government's transparency oversight agency, according to local media reports.
A video of the incident shows at least five lawmakers from both parties arguing intensely, with members elbowing, slapping and pulling each other's hair, as Morena lawmakers attempted to physically remove the PAN members from the podium, despite their refusal to move.
“We went up to the podium peacefully, without touching anyone, and the decision made by the majority legislative group and its allies was to try to regain control of the board through violence,” Mr. Andres Atayde, an aide to the PAN representatives, said at a press conference after the incident.
