Police officer Ahmed Al-Ahmed, who became a hero after the terrorist attack on Sydney's Bondi Beach, has spoken for the first time from his hospital bed.
He was shot five times during a hand-to-hand fight with one of the attackers. Al-Ahmed managed to disarm him and save the lives of dozens of people.
In an interview with TRT World, he expressed himself in simple words, asking for prayers: " Through Allah I went through a very difficult phase. Only Allah knows what I went through. I ask my mother to pray for me. May God make this a minor injury."
According to his former immigration lawyer, Sam Issa, the officer's condition is much more serious than previously reported. Al-Ahmed has undergone several surgeries and is at risk of losing his arm, as one of the bullets is suspected to have damaged nerves. Another bullet is still lodged in his shoulder.
"The pain is really wearing him down. He's riddled with bullets, but he says he would do it again," Issa said.
The attack took place on December 14 during Hanukkah celebrations on the beach. The two suspects, father and son, Sajid Akram, 50, and Naveed Akram, 24, killed 15 people, including a 10-year-old girl, a Holocaust survivor and Rabbi Eli Schlanger.
