Reuters, Axios and New York Times report on military preparations, extreme options towards Iranian leadership and last-minute diplomatic efforts

Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated significantly, as the parties move in parallel in two directions: military preparations and efforts for an agreement on Tehran's nuclear program.

According to international media, including Reuters, Axios and The New York Times, the administration of US President Donald Trump has increased its military presence in the Gulf region, while Iran has tested a new variant of a naval missile and faces new internal tensions.

Missile test in the Strait of Hormuz

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy announced that it has “successfully tested” a naval variant of the Sayyad-3 long-range air defense missile. According to the announcement, the test took place during a large-scale exercise in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic area for global oil traffic.

The announcement came at a time when President Trump declared that the US has amassed what he called "an armada" around Iran, hinting that Washington is preparing various options to increase pressure on Tehran.

Student protests and clashes in Tehran

Domestically, tensions have also returned to universities. Students in Tehran organized protests in memory of the victims killed during the crackdown on demonstrations last month and in support of the arrested students.

According to Iran International, a media outlet affiliated with the Iranian opposition, gunfire was heard in the crowd during clashes with the Basij militia. The reports have not been confirmed by official Iranian authorities.

Protests also took place at the University of Medical Sciences in Mashhad and the Amirkabir University of Technology in Tehran, where students chanted anti-leadership slogans, including calls against Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Extreme options and open negotiations

The American portal Axios, citing anonymous sources close to the administration, reported that among the options presented to President Trump is the possibility of eliminating Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and his son Mojtaba, considered a possible successor. There is no official confirmation of the approval of any such plan.

According to the same source, the US administration is also considering a possible compromise that would allow Iran to enrich uranium “symbolically” on condition that it does not pave the way for the development of a nuclear weapon. A senior US official told Axios that the president would only accept a “substantial” agreement that can be politically supported in the US.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that Tehran will present a new proposal to the US side within two or three days. He denied that the US has demanded a total ban on uranium enrichment and stressed that the goal is to guarantee the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program.

Ultimatums and military moves

According to The New York Times, the US has evacuated hundreds of soldiers from the Al Udeid base in Qatar and has also moved to bases in Bahrain. The same media outlet reported that a second US aircraft carrier is moving to the region.

President Trump said Iran has 10 to 15 days to accept the negotiating terms, warning that otherwise “bad things will happen.” He said he was considering a limited strike to increase pressure at the negotiating table, but added that he had not yet made a final decision.

War risk warnings

Reuters, citing Iranian, American and diplomats in the Persian Gulf and Europe, reported that the sides are rapidly moving towards a military confrontation, while hopes for a diplomatic solution are fading. According to these sources, Gulf countries and Israel now consider conflict more likely than a deal.

Regional officials say a military confrontation could spiral out of control and destabilize the entire Middle East. However, according to US sources cited by Reuters, President Trump has not yet decided whether to use military force.

The situation remains unclear, with negotiations announced for the coming days and an increased military presence in the region. Future developments will depend on the content of the Iranian proposal and the decisions that Washington will take in the coming week. / Pamphlet
